Dr. Elvis Grandic, M.D., a board certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon, began using VERASENSE Sensor Assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) in his practice in 2012, early in its commercial availability from OrthoSensor®, Inc. As an early innovation adopter, he understands the benefits of leveraging technology in the operating room and its role in facilitating the best possible outcomes for his patients. At the time, he knew a tool to quantify soft-tissue balance was an essential need in TKA and something he felt was not delivered by traditional, navigation or robotic instrumentation. Dr. Grandic was highly interested in VERASENSE as a simple technology to help achieve consistent TKA balance results.
Dr. Grandic wanted to ensure that VERASENSE did not over-complicate his procedures or cost too much time in the operating room. In fact, he found his learning curve was very short. After the first 5 cases, he saw it did not impact his regular workflow and was not adding additional procedure time. To his surprise, Dr. Grandic found he was often saving time with VERASENSE. He no longer spent time second-guessing if his patients’ knees were balanced based on his feelings. The real-time data gave him confidence not only in evaluating specific adjustments he could consider to correct an imbalance in the range of motion but also in confirming a well-balanced result overall.
“VERASENSE GIVES ME THE CONFIDENCE I AM GOING TO HAVE A WELL-BALANCED RESULT. IT SAVES ME TIME BECAUSE I’M NO LONGER GUESSING IF MY KNEE IS UNSTABLE; I KNOW IT’S BALANCED BECAUSE I HAVE THE DATA TO BACK IT UP.”
Compared to his prior manual TKA technique, Dr. Grandic observed significant improvements with his patients post-operatively since implementing VERASENSE. His sensor-assisted patients now generally have an increased range of motion, experience a faster recovery and have a more stable knee.
“GOOD CLINICAL RESULTS ARE NECESSARY FOR A NEW TECHNOLOGY TO BE JUSTIFIED. VERASENSE MAKES SENSE FOR BOTH A SURGEON AND A PATIENT. IT’S A TECHNOLOGY A SURGEON CAN USE TO PROVIDE THE BEST CARE THROUGH EVIDENCE-BASED DATA.”
These improved outcomes and the opportunity of using technology to facilitate the best possible treatment for a given case also provide a meaningful value proposition Dr. Grandic presents both to patients in-office and while reaching out to his local community. When patients hear about VERASENSE Sensor-Assisted Knee Replacement, it makes sense to them and is an element they want to be used during their procedures. Today, Dr. Grandic uses VERASENSE in all of his TKAs, including revisions.
“WHEN I INTRODUCE VERASENSE AND ITS BENEFITS TO PATIENTS, IT IMMEDIATELY RESONATES WITH THEM. THEY LIKE THAT THE SENSOR GIVES ME A VISUAL OF WHAT I’M DOING, ALLOWING ME TO SEE THE RELEASES I MAKE AS OPPOSED TO JUST MY FEEL. THEY UNDERSTAND IT’S HELPING ME BE A BETTER SURGEON.”
